Why there's no such thing as a simple website
I can’t count how many times I’ve had people tell me they “just want a simple website”!
Now, don’t get me wrong, there are many (very successful) websites which are minimal, clear and easy to use. In fact, this is exactly what I teach inside my signature web design course for non-techy entrepreneurs Work Your Website!
But those websites are far from simple.
So it’s time to set the record straight and help well-meaning entrepreneurs, like yourself, actually get the website you’re after! Let’s dive in:
Why a good website is never simple
For starters, if a website is working really well for a business I'll happily wager that there is a lot of though, time and strategy behind that site!
Pairing down everything your business is and offers is much harder than putting EVERYTHING out there.
Having a clear strategy that leads to your desired action needs to be well thought out and laid out in the core structure of the website.
Clean, elegant design takes years of training and skill to achieve.
Honing in on exactly what you need to convey and doing that effectively is both an art and a science, and it takes skill and fines to achieve this!
How to better describe the website you want
So, this was inspired by the well-intentioned inquiries I used to receive looking for a “simple” website. And while I totally get where these lovely people are coming from, I think we can improve the way we talk about what you want.
You may be in love with a minimalist aesthetic and want your website to look slick and clean.
Or you want a super easy-to-use website that helps your customers hit “buy” more readily.
Or maybe, you’re politely trying to ask for a website with a smaller investment.
These are all perfectly wonderful goals for your site and your business, and super helpful things to share with any designers you are chatting with. Without this clearer vision of what you need, it’s that much harder to figure out how to help you!
